Meanin of Life
Eric Boggs 10/29/2012 Martin Philosophy The meaning of life has been debated among many people throughout history. Different theories have been used to try and explain what our purpose is in this life. Iââ¬â¢ve always heard from my parents that life is too short for regrets, and that there will be good and bad days. However what is it that people strive for in life? In reality there is no right answer to this simple question. Some people strive for living life in the moment which philosopher Baggini can agree with.Others see religion as an important way to lead their lifeââ¬â¢s as Pojman could agree with. Some like Camus believe its ââ¬Å"humanly impossibleâ⬠to find the meaning of life. Ultimately people must find it in themselves as to their purpose in this life. Julian Baggini speaks of our purpose in this life that is more appealing than Camus or Pojman. Baggini has a teleological view on life meaning our purpose is looking forward to future goals and objectives. Howe ver Baggini doesnââ¬â¢t mean that our purpose is to succeed presently avoiding personal happiness to achieve a better future. An example he mentions is when people say ââ¬Å" I can die happy nowâ⬠because a lifetime fulfillment has been achieved. What is the purpose of life after achieving a lifelong goal, and in reality Baggini essentially says ââ¬Å"Why notâ⬠. There is nothing to live for and the feeling of emptiness settles in as nothing will satisfy that lifelong achievement. Baginni says ââ¬Å" the person who sacrifices too much enjoyment of life to serve the purpose of future wealth and security is thus making the mistake of overestimating the extent to which is future life will be better than the one he could have nowâ⬠.Most people strive for a rich and fashionable lifestyle, but at what cost is someone willing to make for it. Baggini says what about this rich lifestyle is different than a person who doesnââ¬â¢t have these luxuries. Just because someone has a lot of material happiness doesnââ¬â¢t mean that person is happier. In my view I believe Baggini has the closet view on the meaning of life because living life for a nice future while taking advantages of lifeââ¬â¢s luxuries presently is a meaningful way to live.Personally Iââ¬â¢m not a deeply religious person, but I do know people who value religion and incorporate their views in their daily actions. Pojman argues that religion specifically theistic religion gives meaning to life. Pojman begins by defining what it means to be free and autonomous; he refers being autonomous as being ââ¬Å"self-governedâ⬠or freedom to make your own choices. Pojman points out autonomy is good if it serves a purpose. Whether it is doing good or bad it still serves a purpose towards life. Pojman pointed out to key points an atheist women had mentioned to him in the past. One being it is more important to be free than autonomous, and the second point being ââ¬Å"Religion provides a grand meaning or purpose to live, but it does not allow humans to be free or autonomousâ⬠according to the atheist women. Pojman argues freedom canââ¬â¢t be understood apart from the notion of purposiveness. Pojman states in order to be ââ¬Å"freeâ⬠one has toâ⬠Act A, when you want to, in order to reach some goal Gâ⬠. However Pojman looked into the bigger picture as to what this atheist woman was stating. Pojman essentially contradicts her statement with reasoning.Pojman says freedom and autonomy are often distant from each other, but in theism it is bound together. Pojman way of defining the purpose of life wasnââ¬â¢t as appealing to me as Baggini. Religion does play a role in aspects of peopleââ¬â¢s lives just not enough in my opinion for it to matter. Camus had different views from Pojman and Baggini because he believed life was absurd and meaningless. Suicide was a prominent idea that Camus commonly spoke of. Camus states that suicide was implying you were confessing that ââ¬Å"its not worth the troubleâ⬠.He used an example of a man who killed himself five years after his daughter had passed away. The man simply was to emotionally instable to return to his normal behaviors. Camus had also mentioned absurdity which he defined a split in a man and his overall life. Camus explained that daily routine like working several hours a week and doing the same thing everyday will eventually come to a halt. The question is why? Why do eventually want things to change after having a stable routine life.Camus says this is weariness which possibly leads to the idea of suicide. If something abruptly changes such as death there are two options he implies. One being able to recover what is lost, or the other is suicide. He uses the example of Sisyphus which is a god that was condemned to the underworld. Sisyphus pushes a huge stone to the top of this mountain only to roll back to the bottom to do the process from start. Camus implies tha t this is a usual aspect in peopleââ¬â¢s lives where being stable and having a routine is sustaining until it collapses.I feel Camus implies what is the point of living such a life if itââ¬â¢s inevitable that tragedy will likely occur. Iââ¬â¢ve had friends commit suicide and Iââ¬â¢ve have often wondered if there was anything I could have done about. In reality I looked at it from Camus point of view as it provided them a way out and essentially tell me life is not worth living. There in so plan that says how one should live, but merely a reason to find a way to live. Baggini viewed life mostly in the moment as long as happiness and future endeavors were balanced.Pojman had the idea that religion played an important role in oneââ¬â¢s life while Camus thought in the end suicide seemed to be the right choice if life became too difficult. Baggini in my opinion had the closet way in interpreting the purpose of life. Baggini explains that happiness in the present with balan ced goals in the future should be a way someone should live. I certainly donââ¬â¢t want to wait ten years to live a rich lifestyle while family and friends slip away. Life is what one makes it, but the key is finding out what purpose do people find it.

Minimum Wage in California Research Paper
Minimum wage is the minimum hourly, daily or monthly wage that must be paid to employees or workers. Each country sets its own minimum wage laws and regulations, and more than 90 percent of all countries have some kind of minimum wage legislation. In the United States, statutory minimum wages were first introduced nationally in 1938 (Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia). The minimum wage was enacted in 1938 as part of the Fair Labor Standards Act. The first minimum wage was .25 an hour. This has increased over the years and the current federal minimum wage is $5.15 an hour (Minimum Wage from http://jobsearch.about.com/od/minimumwage/a/minimumwage.htm) California minimum wages is based on their law to be implemented and imposed for the employer to follow for the protection of both the employee and the employer. Body of the Paper The California State Senate and Assembly have approved legislation that would give 1.4 million minimum-wage earners a $1-an-hour raise and boost annual pay to keep up with inflation. The Federal Minimum Wage Labor Law for California stated that employees under 20 years of age may be paid $4.25 per hour during their first 90 consecutive calendar days of employment with an employer. Certain full-time students, student learners, apprentices, and workers with disabilities may be paid less than the minimum wage under special certificates issued by the Department of Labor. California law is strict and pitiless to employers who have improperly paid the workers less than $6.75 per hour. Not only that an employers entitled to pay the unpaid minimum wage pay, but also the interest and penalties as well. But, the right to collect unpaid minimum wage pay does not last forever. In fact, if u delays in claiming the unpaid wages, you risk of losing unpaid minimum wage for work occurring more than three years prior to your filing of a lawsuit. Although there are some exceptions, because almost all employees in California must be paid the minimum wage as required by state law. Effective January 1, 2002, the minimum wage in California is $6.75 per hour. There are some employees who are exempt from the minimum wage law, such as outside salespersons, individuals who are the parent, spouse, or child of the employer, and apprentices regularly indentured under the State Division of Apprenticeship Standards. (Minimum Wage Order, MW-2001). California Wage Law has an exception for learners, regardless of age, who may be paid not less than 85 percent of the minimum wage rounded to the nearest nickel during their first 160 hours of employment in occupations in which they have no previous similar or related experience. There are also exceptions for employees who are mentally or physically disabled, or both, and for nonprofit organizations such as sheltered workshops or rehabilitation facilities that employ disabled workers. Such individuals and organizations may be issued a special license by the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement authorizing employment at a wage less than the legal minimum wage (Minimum Wage Labor Code Sections 1191 and 1191.5). Minimum wage legislation may be interpreted as making it either unlawful for employers to pay workers less than the minimum wage, or unlawful for workers to provide labor or services for less than the minimum. White trade unions lobbied for the introduction of minimum wage laws to exclude black workers from the labor market. This minimum wage law prevents black workers from selling their labor for less than white workers, the black workers were prevented from competing for jobs held by whites although it is the employer who is fined and/or imprisoned for violations, and the workers also loses their freedom to do what they want for themselves. The minimum wage offers substantial benefits to low-wage workers without negative effect. The best recent research shown that the job loss reported in earlier analyses does not; occur when the minimum wage is increased. If the minimum wage were increased nationally to $7.25: almost 14.9 million workers would receive a raise, and 80 percent of those affected are adults age 20 or over, and 7.3 million children would see their parentââ¬â¢s income rise that can make the familyââ¬â¢s income stable. Families with affected workers rely on those workers for over half of their earnings.46 percent of all families with affected workers rely solely on the earnings from those workers. Some minimum wage workers remain in low-wage jobs for substantial periods. The best recent research on the economic impact of the minimum wage shows positive effects without job loss. Even the research that suggests a negative labor market effect shows only a minimal impact that is more than offset by the higher wage levels. The states that have adopted higher-than-federal minimum wages have seen low-wage workers incomes rise with no negative side-effects. Over 650 economists, including five Nobel Prize winners and six past presidents of the American Economics Association, recently signed a statement stating that federal and state minimum wage increases ââ¬Å"can significantly improve the lives of low-income workers and their families, without the adverse effects that critics have claimedâ⬠(EPI 2006). Conclusion Startingà January 1, 2002, the minimum wage in California is $6.75 per hour it is strictly imposed and implemented by Law to be follow by all the businesses both public and private sectors. In this Minimum Wage law there is the difference between the state and federal minimum wage? It stated that most employers in California are subject to both the federal and state minimum wage laws. The effect of this dual coverage is that when there are conflicting requirements in the laws, the employer must follow the strict standard; the one that is the most beneficial to the employee. Since California's current law requires a higher minimum wage rate than does the federal law, all employers in California who are subject to both laws must pay the state minimum wage rate unless their employees are exempt under California law. The minimum wage is an obligation of the employer and cannot be waived by any agreement, including collective bargaining. And in this law any remedial legislation written for The protection of employees may not be violated by agreement between the employer and employee (Minimum Wage, Civil Code Sections 1668 and 3513). California law of minimum wage stated that there is no distinction made between adults and minors when it comes to payment. And an employer may not use employeeââ¬â¢s tips as a credit towards its obligation to pay the minimum wages If the employer doesnââ¬â¢t pay the employee it is also stated in the law that an employee can file a lawsuit in court against the employer to recover the lost wages and it is the duty of the court to order the employer to pay the attorneyââ¬â¢s fees, and if your not working for this employer, you can make a claim for the waiting time penalty pursuant to Minimum Wage Labor Code section Today, the earnings of a full-time minimum wage worker with a family of three would earn $10,712 a year, thus falling below the official 2006 federal poverty level of $16,600. Although the federal poverty line is an inadequate measure of the income needed to support a family, this comparison highlights the severe insufficiency of the current minimum wage (Fisher 1999). Finally, the earnings of minimum wage workers are essential to their familiesââ¬â¢ total income. While not all minimum wage workers are poor or are the sole breadwinner for their families, it is striking how important low-wage workersââ¬â¢ income is to their economic well-being. On average, families with affected workers rely on those workers for over half (59%) of theà Familiesââ¬â¢ total earnings. Nearly half (46%) of all families with an affected worker rely solely on the earnings of those workers. 2008 Presidential Campaigns and the Internet Essay
In fairly recent times the Internet has gained vast importance for the dissemination of information to the public.à The numbers of users on the Internet have grown exponentially throughout the years.à Presidential candidates have always recognized this fact and have procured websites to establish their viewpoints and positions on issues as well as ask for donations.à An evaluation of the John McCain, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama website will demonstrate how the candidates react to their beliefs in how the public consumes information. à à à à à à à à à à à John McCainââ¬â¢s website is the first to be investigated.à His website is mainly around to cater to his core voters of the Republican Party, but no doubt he is also attempting to appeal to all American citizens.à The first thing a person will notice from McCainââ¬â¢s website is that once you initially travel to his webpage it will first go to an introduction page asking viewers to join his email group as well as a button to donate money to his campaign.à The website does not start out with positions on issues or contain endorsements etc.à It appears McCainââ¬â¢s ultimate goal at the start is to solicit money to further his campaign.à This introduction page shows an image of John McCain in black and white with a black background, and does not contain any images or colors of the United States. (http://www.johnmccain.com/landing/?sid=gorganic) This aspect of the website is peculiar because it introduces a solicitation right from the start.à It could make some readers of the site not want to endorse McCain, especially readers that have ventured to his site in order to learn more about his positions.à At the bottom of the donation page there is a small link that asks whether or not the reader wants to go to the actual John McCain website.à Once a reader of the site clicks on this link then the real presidential website begins to form.à McCainââ¬â¢s main site has three items of note.à First, there is a video link that summarizes McCainââ¬â¢s torture and imprisonment in a POW camp, and the video is called ââ¬Å"Courageous Service.â⬠(http://www.johnmccain.com/)à Three other links to the website are on this part of the page called ââ¬Å"About John McCain,â⬠ââ¬Å"Why John McCain,â⬠and ââ¬Å"On the Issues.â⬠(http://www.johnmccain.com/) These sections are a good addition to the website because it allows an investigation into the person, why he should be president, and his stand on the issues.à The reader does not have to search through the site to find a particular campaign issue or information about McCain.à It is all separated and easy to identify.à A section of rotating pictures is on this portion of the site as well that gives insight into campaign activities.à An important aspect of the website is that McCain included a petition for the housing crisis. The petition is little more than a show of support for McCain in dealing with the housing crisis instead of what a reader would think as a real petition to enact some type of legislation. (http://www.johnmccain.com/involving/petition.aspx?guid=cf43f8ff-0854-4735-8346-9e4d07582474)à McCainââ¬â¢s presidential campaign website shows his trials and tribulations as well as his strong points throughout.à It establishes what many would see as a strong man that sticks by his beliefs on issues and does not waiver in the face of dissension.à Altogether the website effectively establishes what McCain undoubtedly attempted to present to the public. à à à à à à à à à à à Hillary Clintonââ¬â¢s website is similar to McCainââ¬â¢s in that it initially starts off with a donation page that appears to be separate from her main page. (https://contribute.hillaryclinton.com/donate-b.html?sc=a724)à However, Clintonââ¬â¢s donation page is different from McCainââ¬â¢s because it plays a video of her support and numerous members of a crowd cheering her name.à Unlike McCain, Clintonââ¬â¢s donation page and the rest of her main site is not dark, but is a light shade of blue. (http://www.hillaryclinton.com/splash/)à Once a reader clicks to her main site, they are met with another page that is asking the person to join her campaign as a member.à This appears to be the entire composition of her website, which is a little disappointing.à A prospective voter cannot visit her site and learn about her message or positions on issues. A viewer may overlook yet another link that will send the reader to the main site. (http://www.hillaryclinton.com/splash/)à On the main site it seems as though Clinton is concerned about winning the Texas delegation. (http://www.hillaryclinton.com/?splash=1) A logo pleads with the reader to help her win the state.à A spotlight section on the main site lists events such as winning a chance to meet Clinton and Elton John, veteransââ¬â¢ affairs, and an opinion from Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin.à A little section titled ââ¬Å"The Hillary I knowâ⬠will show some of her positions on issues, but the logo for the link is very small and is not a major part of the page.à This is in stark contrast to the organized sections of the McCain site.à Clintonââ¬â¢s site is more appealing to the eye, but it lacks the substance that McCainââ¬â¢s website contains. à à à à à à à à à à à Barack Obamaââ¬â¢s presidential website has the same introduction page as the other two, but this time Obama speaks directly to the visitor instead of showing some campaign activities.à In order to navigate Obamaââ¬â¢s site, a user is required to register, however a reader can circumvent the registration process by merely typing in his main site and then visiting the sections on issues, learning about the candidate, etc. (http://my.barackobama.com/page/user/login?successurl=L3BhZ2UvZGFzaGJvYXJkL3ByaXZhdGU) This is a horrible concept for a website because it immediately will turn visitors away by making them think they need to register in order to learn more about the candidate.à Obamaââ¬â¢s website is also in a light shade of blue similar to Clintonââ¬â¢s and offers many instances for a visitor to view videos and photos like the other campaign sites.à However, it appears that Obamaââ¬â¢s website has the least amount of information available to a prospective voter, and thus is probably the worst website out of the three discussed. Anthropology - Essay Example Some of the mutations are silent and do not bring chances in the exonic sequence of the DNA, hence they remain silent. In certain cases these silent mutations may be expressed in the next generation or are lost with the individual. Thus, mutation or modifications of genomic sequences affects the expression of the genes in a given population. Equilibrium is observed for every inheritable modification and is studied with the help of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. H-W equilibrium provides the basis to analyze the alleles of the gene(s). If no modification occurred, the static allele frequency, crossways generations, remain static. For instance, in the present case, characteristic of the earlobe, either attached or unattached could be studied as the simple case of single locus. The alleles are present on the single locus in two different forms namely; the dominant allele is denoted by E and the recessive by e with frequencies denoted by p and q respectively. Frequency of E freq (E) = p and frequency of e, freq(e)= q. In a given population, under ideal conditions p + q =1 The heterozygotes according to Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, freq (Aa) = 2pq. According to Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, p2 + 2pq + q2 = 1 (p is the dominant allele and q is the recessive allele). Punnett square for Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium explains the genetics of transmission of traits in a population. The equation explains the prevailing frequency of allelic forms of earlobe, attached or unattached and hence the equation is highly

Marketing - Essay Example It is a sure fact that marketing has addressed those areas which were deemed as the grey ones in the past by the people who had business dealings, undertook high-level strategies, initiated one to one connections and so on (Kotler 2003). This paper will take a keen look on the basis of marketing coming about in full circle and that too for the betterment of the masses in meticulous. Marketing is defined as the art of selling products and/or services through the effective usage of persuasion, psychology and repetition. One must believe that marketing employs a number of practices which are regarded as its sub-fields namely advertising, sales promotion activities, personal selling, public relations (or publicity) and direct mailing to name a few. With the passage of time, the definition of marketing has changed as it has included a pre-manufacture tilt to its basis with regards to a product and/or service. Selling gets differentiated from marketing in the fact that selling is only done when a product is made available on the shelf within a retail outlet while marketing starts even when there is an idea or concept of the related product and thus the whole game starts as a result of this hype within the relevant audiences. Marketing aims to pinpoint the needs of the target consumers and addresses the same whilst meeting their very needs through the purchase of the product/service and its ultimate usage. If there is no selling of the product, there would be no association of the need with the target audience and hence marketing might not be needed at all. Thus marketing looks to solve the problems in which the consumers are tied up and even when there is no problem at all ââ¬â just to satisfy oneââ¬â¢s desires ââ¬â they are asked to purchase a product/service so as to have a better standing within a particular social circle or society. In other words, this encompasses the basis of self-esteem needs if not

Managerial Economics - Essay Example In general, the Coarse theory is a legal and economic theory which affirms that, where complete competitive markets with no transaction costs are, an efficient set of outputs and inputs from and to the production-optimal distribution will be selected. This is without paying regard to how property rights are being divided. The parties involved can negotiate or bargain terms beneficial to them than an outcome of a property rights assigned to them (Mankiw, 2007). This is to say that they are not completely obliged by the property rights to trade for as long as they are able to trade and produce an outcome that is mutually advantageous to all of them. For this to exclusively occur, then the cost of bargaining or any cost associated with it such as cost of meetings must be extremely costless as any cost at all will influence the outcome of the bargain. However, no exact definition of the Coarse theorem has been established (Sloman & Sutcliffe, 2003).Theory of the FirmEconomically, a firm is referred to as a legally organized and recognized organization that is designed with the main purpose of providing goods and services to the consumers. Coarse in establishing his theory, used applications based on the activities of the firm and related the same to the planning capability of a firmââ¬â¢s management. This might be metaphorically perceived as the firm being an island of planning in a sea of markets. When firms make decisions regarding production of the goods or services they produce., they do so guided by certain principles and which are as described by this theory proposed by Ronald Coarse (Rasmusen, 2007). This theory of the firm consists of several economic theories that seek to describe, explain and predict the nature of a firm. It seeks to answer questions about the existence of the firm, its behaviors and structures, their organization, the boundaries of firms and the heterogeneity of the performance of the firms. In reality, most firms are known to exist as alternative systems to the market-price mechanism if it can produce efficiently in a non-market environment. Consider an example of the labor market: it can be very costly for firms to produce efficiently if they have to hire and fire their employees based on the demand and supply conditions. Similarly, a shift by employees from one company to another everyday may be seen as costly or when companies shift each day in search of new suppliers (Williamson et al, 1991). This is because any action involves costs in it hence, the essence of firmsââ¬â¢ transactions costs. The safest modality for the firm in such scenarios is to engage in long term contracts with either their workers or suppliers so as to be able to minimize on costs and at the same time maximize on the property rights.
